A 30-year-old man is facing several criminal charges after allegedly shooting in the direction of some construction workers Monday morning in Superior — an incident that led to an hours-long standoff with police until he was taken into custody.
The suspect, John Terrell Wilkins, was arrested on one count of attempted first degree homicide, four counts of felony menacing, eight counts of reckless endangerment and one count of prohibited use of a firearm. He was later transported to the Boulder County Jail, according to a Boulder County Sheriff’s news release.
Since the investigation of the incident is ongoing, a booking photo of the suspect had not been released, the news release states.
A report of a party who was possibly shooting a gun into the air near some construction workers in the vicinity of the 2200 block of Buttercup Lane in Superior was fielded by Boulder County dispatchers at 9:46 a.m.,the news release states.
The suspect had gone back into his residence and the reporting party told the dispatchers that they did not believe anyone had been shot, the news release states.
On-scene interviews revealed the suspect might have been upset with on-going construction in the area and possibly pointed a rifle in the direction of the construction workers. Investigators found that the suspect then fired the rifle in the direction of the construction crew but did not strike anyone.
Deputies established a parameter around the suspect’s residence and began attempts to contact him, the news release states. After several hours, about 1:30 p.m., deputies were able to contact the suspect and take him into custody without incident. There were no reported injuries to deputies nor the suspect, the news release states.
Deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Louisville Police Department and the city of Boulder Police Department along with members of the Boulder County, city of Boulder and Longmont SWAT Teams, Boulder County Emergency Squad and the Mountain View Fire Protection District all responded to the call and assisted with its peaceful resolution, the news release states.
