Man trapped in 9-foot hole and dies in Longmont

An investigation is still underway as to why the hole collapsed.

Rescue crews responded to a call in the 100 block of Baylor Drive, today around noon, where a man was found dead in an excavation incident.

The contract worker for a Denver-based excavation company was replacing a sewer line at a private residence when the hole collapsed. When rescue crews arrived on the scene, the man was already deceased.

“It was approximately a 9-foot hole that they had excavated, and unfortunately he was deceased,” Longmont police Sgt. Sara Flunker told the Times-Call. “It’s a very unfortunate accident is what it is.”

Rescue crews worked for over two hours to remove the man from the hole.

An investigation of why the hole collapsed is still underway.

In the meantime, Baylor Drive remains closed to traffic and a time for it to reopen has yet to be reported.
