Are your children struggling with homework? The Longmont Public Library is offering help by restarting their weekly Homework Help program for St. Vrain Valley students.

The program is seen as a vital service for children and teens to receive one-on-one help with their homework. Through the program, librarians have seen students gain confidence, study skills and overall improvements in reading, math, social studies and science.

In addition, as Claire Studholme, head librarian of the children and teen department states, "one-on-one tutoring is expensive and private tutoring is not accessible for many children and teens in Longmont, thus the Library sees our Homework Help program as a vital service to our school-aged community whose children are perhaps struggling in school.

This program has reached often traditionally underserved populations of kids who often get left behind in large classroom settings due to various social, economic, and language barriers."

The Homework Help program ties well into the library's mission "to serve our community by providing equal access to information and resources for education, enrichment, enlightenment and enjoyment," by supporting the positive development of Longmont's youth.

Each Wednesday night, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., while SVVSD is in session, the library's team of volunteers gather to wait for students to arrive. Currently, there are 4-5 volunteers on average.

For the future of this program the library hopes to add a book buddy program, where teens mentor younger students in reading.

"We hope the program provides families and youth with a sense of belonging and excitement for learning and growth," says Studholme.

My Journey as an Election Judge: How It Began

Written by Shelia Conroy: Wherever you are on the political spectrum, it has been a tumultuous year – make that two years. Where to turn? As a naturalized citizen of some 25 years, I have faithfully voted in every election, both national and local. But now I felt this was just not quite enough. I can’t remember where and how I thought of it but decided that I would be an Election Volunteer. Read more.
