The following is a press release from the City of Longmont and is published by the Longmont Observer as a public service.

RTD is hosting a public meeting on September 26 at the Longmont Public Library conference room, 409 4th Avenue, at 6 pm to discuss discontinuing service on Longmont bus routes.

Starting January 13, 2019, RTD is proposing to discontinue service on routes LD1 and LD2 south of US 36 due to low ridership and duplicate service on FF routes. Service would also be rerouted south of Lafayette Park-n-Ride via US 287, west Dillon Road, SH42 (96th Street), Interlocken Parkway, Vara and into US 36 & Flatiron Station.

Service frequency would be increased to 60 minutes all day between 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m., combined with LD1 and LD3 rush-hour frequency, 30-minute frequency would be created between both routes between 8th & Coffman Park-n-Ride and US 287 and Dillon Road. Route 225 would be renamed between Lafayette Park-n-Ride and US 36 & Broomfield Station to Route LD3 and reduce service frequency between US 36 & Broomfield Station and Lafayette Park-n-Ride to 60 minutes, maintaining the current service span. Route 225 would be retained between Downtown Boulder Station and Mohawk and Talbot. Additionally, Route 225 service would move from East Boulder Recreation Center to Mohawk and Talbot and weekday rush-hour service frequency would increase to 15 minutes in both directions.

Longmont city officials have asked RTD to wait on any service cuts involving Longmont until more evaluation is completed on the full effects of these cuts on our transit users.

In addition to the public meeting, RTD is asking for public feedback about service changes at [email protected].

Well Seasoned: Chile Peppers

Susan Pope knows her peppers. Pope is a farmer from Greeley who runs the stand at the Longmont Saturday Farmers Market near the entrance with the tantalizing revolving roaster and has been at it for 35 years. Her farm is represented at six area farmers markets and her farm stand is open seven days a week, in season. Pope welcomes the pepper season that runs from August through October—or the first frost—when she makes hay, or peppers, while the sun shines. And it’s been shining in Colorado a lot lately...continue reading.

Designing Greener Streets Starts With Finding Room For Bicycles And Trees

Anne LuskHarvard UniversityCity streets and sidewalks in the United States have been engineered for decades to keep vehicle occupants and pedestrians safe. If streets include trees at all, they might be planted in small sidewalk pits, where, if constrained and with little water, they live only three to 10 years on average. Until recently, U.S. streets have also lacked cycle tracks – paths exclusively for bicycles between the road and the sidewalk, protected from cars by some type of barrier. Today there is growing support for bicycling in many U.S. cities for both commuting and recreation. Research is also showing that urban trees provide many benefits, from absorbing air pollutants to cooling neighborhoods. As an academic who has focused on the bicycle for 37 years, I am interested in helping planners integrate cycle tracks and trees into busy streets...continue reading.
