Motor vehicle express kiosks eliminate the need to go the DMV to renew vehicle registration

The average transaction at one of these kiosks takes less than two minutes and, after a successful renewal, a new registration document and license plate decal prints immediately.

In Colorado, renewing your vehicle registration tags no longer requires a trip to the local Department of Motor Vehicles.

Motor vehicle express kiosks — self-service kiosks located around the state — offer residents a fast and easy way to renew their vehicle registration tags. According to the Colorado Motor Vehicle Express, or CMVE, website, the average transaction at one of these kiosks takes less than two minutes and, “after a successful renewal, a new registration document and license plate decal prints immediately,” the website states.

Colorado residents can renew their vehicle registration starting the month prior to their registration’s expiration date. If someone leaves their vehicle registration to expire, they run the risk of having to pay a $25 fee per month. If the grace period for having no registration expires, they may owe back ownership taxes, or taxes from the previous year.

According to CMVE, if a vehicle owner meets the four requirements, they may renew their vehicle registration at any kiosk in the state.

  • Your vehicle(s) must be registered in a participating county.
  • Your address must be correct on your renewal notice.
  • You must have proof of liability insurance on file (if indicated on your renewal postcard).
  • You must have a valid Vehicle Emission Inspection on file (if applicable).

Renewing a vehicle’s registration at a kiosk is a three step process. First, the kiosk prompts the individual to scan their renewal postcard or type their license plate number.

Next, car owners pay the renewal taxes and fees — a $3.00-$3.95 per vehicle fee via card, according to CMVE — via card, check or, at select locations, cash.

Finally, the registration and tab prints on the spot, meaning the vehicle’s registration is renewed and the vehicle’s owner is ready to go.
