The NAACP Boulder County is holding a screening of the documentary “True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality.” The documentary shares Bryan Stevenson’s experience with the criminal justice system.

Stevenson is a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer who dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned, according to the Equal Justice Initiative.

He believes that the system “treats you better if you’re rich and guilty than if you’re poor and innocent,” according to a news release from the NAACP.

The film explores the burden of facing the system through candid interviews with associates, close family members and clients.

One of the stories featured in the film is of Anthony Hinton. Hinton was falsely charged, convicted and sentenced to death. He served 29 years on death row before he was freed and exonerated.

Hinton traveled the world sharing his story with others. He also published a book “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row.” Hinton will appear in Boulder on Feb. 18 at the NAACP’s 2024 Freedom Fund Celebration at 3 p.m. at Macky Auditorium.
