Come join the Boulder County League of Women Voters and Colorado State Senator Mike Foote on a live webinar to learn more about the campaign to ensure that every person’s vote for the presidency is equal. We will start by showing the award winning documentary, Winner Take All, from 6:30 - 7:00, followed by a short presentation by Senator Foote, who will then take your questions.
Senator Foote was the legislative sponsor of the National Popular Vote bill, SB 42, which passed the Colorado House and Senate, and was signed into law by Governor Polis in March, 2019. In November, Coloradans will be asked to affirm our commitment to a National Popular Vote for the Presidency by voting YES on a ballot measure asking us to approve this legislation.
In 2018, Mike Foote was elected to represent Senate District 17, which covers eastern Boulder County. He currently serves as Chair of the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee and is a member of the Appropriations Committee, Transportation and Energy Committee, and the Committee on Legal Services. He formerly served six years in the Colorado House of Representatives.
The National Popular Vote would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The bill ensures that every vote, in every state, will matter in every presidential election.
The National Popular Vote bill has been enacted by 16 jurisdictions possessing 196 electoral votes, and will go into effect when enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes—that is, enough to elect a President (270 of 538). Colorado passed the National Popular Vote bill in the 2019 legislative session, and Governor Polis signed it into law on March 15, 2019. In November, 2020 Colorado voters will be asked to confirm that they are committed to a popular vote for the presidency.
