Deep Thoughts Philosophy Reading Group (Virtual)

You've likely felt irritated. You've likely felt irritated today. But when was the last time you stopped to reflect on your own feelings and expressions of irritation? (Maybe you feel newly irritated at the tone of that last line!) In this month's essay, "A Meditation On Irritation: A Feeling In Search Of a Cause", Will Rees reflects on what irritation is and why it can seem inaccessible to critical reflection. Join us for a discussion of this short essay.

Register through Eventbrite

(Event limited to 24 participants) You will receive the Zoom information for the meeting after registration. Please email the facilitator if you can't find the Zoom info; they'll get back to you right away.

About the Deep Thoughts Philosophy Reading Group

  • Meets every fourth Monday of each month, from 7-8:30 pm, via Zoom
  • Open to adults and older teens aged 16+.

This group meets monthly to discuss a classic short work of philosophy or an excerpt from a longer work.

Participants read the work prior to our meeting, and together we explore the meaning of the text and the value it offers us. All participants are welcome, including those who are unable to read the entire selection before the meeting.

Sessions are facilitated by Dawn Jacobs and other graduate students of the Philosophy Outreach Program of Colorado at CU Boulder (POPCO). Facilitators will focus on encouraging and guiding a group discussion/learning event rather than on teaching.

Music and Memoirs: Artistic Responses to the Holocaust - REGISTER

  • Location: Library
    409 Fourth Ave.
  • For middle school students to adults

Longmont composer, Michael Udow, will describe the development of his opera, "A Wall of Two," and will share a video of musical excerpts. The opera is based on the Holocaust survival story of sisters Henia and Ilona Karmel.

Udow will be joined by psychologist and author Joy Wolfe Ensor, the daughter and niece of Henia and Ilona, who will describe and read from the anthology, "The Ones Who Remember: Second-Generation Voices of the Holocaust," of which she is co-editor and a contributing author. Ensor's chapter, One Day the World Will Be the World Again, focuses heavily on the Karmel sisters’ literary careers, the intergenerational legacy of writing in her family, and the power of creative writing as a force for healing and resilience after trauma.

A Q&A discussion, and an opportunity to purchase Ensor’s book, will follow the presentation.

Kayak Camp

9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

St. Vrain Creek in Longmont and Lyons

The Young Rippers Kayak Camp, which will run from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm from Saturday May 27 to Wednesday May 31 on the St. Vrain Creek in Longmont and Lyons, is aimed at introducing kids to the joys of river kayaking.

“Kayaking is a great way for young people to gain confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and get some outdoor exercise,” says TCWR head coach Liam Malakoff, a certified kayak instructor who will be leading the program. “This camp is all about making sure they have the foundation to kayak with assurance and safety.”

The program revolves around four concepts, Malakoff says: “Flow, fun, power, and poise.” It will include coaching in proper paddling technique, games, and opportunities to practice boating skills, including how to “roll” a kayak upright if it flips over. Kids will also learn to identify and avoid potential safety hazards, and get introduced to the Olympic sport of kayak racing. The cost is $475.

To learn more about the camp, visit Team Colorado’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TeamColoradoWhitewaterRacingClub/) or email [email protected].
