Police: Man shot Friday by Longmont officers in stable condition

The man was in stable condition after having surgery at Medical Center of the Rockies, according to police spokesman.

A man shot by Longmont police was listed in stable condition late Friday and is expected to survive, Longmont Police Deputy Chief Jeff Satur said.

The 26-year-old man, who is Black, had surgery at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland after being airlifted from Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont, according to Satur.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was shot by police early Friday morning after police say he pulled a BB gun on officers. The gun looked identical to a handgun, Satur said.

Police confronted the man at the Stonehedge Place apartment at 600 Martin Street at 1:11 a.m. Friday after a resident reported he was harassing a woman at the complex.

Police asked him to put his hands up and asked if he was armed. The man told police he was not armed and initially complied with orders, Satur said. As officers approached the man, he pulled what appeared to be a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at officers.

Officers pulled their weapons and asked the man to put down his weapon, when one officer fired his handgun at the man, Satur said.

Police said the man then ducked between two cars, and did not comply when ordered to put down the weapon. Another officer fired his rifle at the man.

There was no indication which of the officers' shots hit the man. The officers involved have not been identified.

No police were hurt in the shooting.

The two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the external investigation, which is department policy. The Critical Incident Team for the 20th Judicial District is investigating the case, Satur said Friday.

The multi-agency Critical Incident Team investigates fatalities in which law enforcement uses physical or deadly force in the course of official duties.

Police were at the complex Friday gathering clues. Police also were investigating the relationship between the man and the woman he was reportedly harassing at the complex.

In a Facebook post, Longmont police asked anyone who witnessed the incident to call Lafayette Police Department Cmdr. Scott Emmerson at 303-661-1398.
