Boulder County Senior Law Day returns in person this year at the Boulder Jewish Community Center.

The free event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 24 and is meant to help older adults, their family members and caregivers to make informed decisions about legal, health and lifestyle matters in Boulder County.

“People face increasingly complicated legal scenarios as they age or as they care for an aging loved one,” said Sarah Pheral, attorney and organizer for the Senior Law Day event. “Some of the laws related to seniors and aging are not intuitive, and there is a lot of bad information out there creating additional confusion. This is a great opportunity to learn about Colorado’s laws and to get guidance and information about community resources available to help navigate these issues.”

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty will give a keynote speech on Elder Abuse to start the event at 9 a.m. There will be several other presentations on legal topics of importance to seniors and caregivers.

The popular Ask-A-Lawyer sessions will also resume in-person. Attendees can sign up for a free 15-minute consultation with an attorney specializing in a variety of senior-related practice areas on a walk-in basis during the event.

“Seniors can ask the volunteer attorneys anything, although we may not have attorneys who are experts in every field,” Pheral said. “We'll try to focus on legal issues we know are typically important to seniors such as estate planning, probate, special needs and disability-related concerns, elder law and Medicaid for long-term care”

The event is free to attend and pre-registration is available though not required to attend at www.bouldercountyseniorlawday.org. Some presentations will be recorded and made available later on the event’s YouTube channel.

“As this is our first year back after two years of virtual events, we are trying to balance safety with the educational value of being in-person,” Pheral said. “We encourage attendees to follow all local public health guidance, mask if they are particularly high-risk and continue to engage in frequent hand washing and hand sanitizing.”

Attendees may pick up a free copy of the Colorado Bar Association's Senior Law Handbook at the event while supplies last. The books will also be available after the event at various community partner locations.
