The City of Boulder announced on July 7 that the South Boulder Recreation Center (SBRC) will close earlier than anticipated this year in order to complete mandatory annual maintenance and repairs in the facility. The city said that the pool will close on Sunday, July 13 and is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, October 1, while the full facility is scheduled to close on Monday, July 21 and is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, September 2.
In its announcement, the city said that Boulder Parks and Recreation (BPR) temporarily closes recreation centers for “deep cleaning and short-term maintenance” every year. SBRC is closing earlier than originally scheduled to “support critical maintenance repairs in the building,” the city said.
Last year, Boulder Reporting Lab (BRL) reported that the 50-year-old SBRC building “has been deteriorating for years and is nearing the end of its life, according to city officials.” Officials told BRL that the pool was leaking and that the boiler (which failed in 2021) needs to be replaced. If it fails again, BRL said, the pool will permanently close.
The City of Boulder said that the extended closure of the SBRC pool and building will allow the city to “complete necessary maintenance repairs that will extend the life of the building.” The city said that the maintenance project was “identified earlier this year to be scheduled during summer pool operations to lessen the impact on the community.”
Extended maintenance at the East Boulder Community Center took place in March. The North Boulder Recreation Center’s temporary maintenance closure will occur from Saturday, August 9 to Thursday, August 17.
