A 16-year-old male from Boulder was flown to a Denver-area hospital Saturday night with life-threatening injuries after the mountain bike he was riding crashed on steep, rugged trails in Lower Lefthand Canyon.

The Boulder County Communications Center received a report of a mountain biker, who had crashed and was not conscious, according to a Boulder County Sheriff news release.

The male had been accompanied by other cyclists on the Lower Lefthand Canyon trails in the U.S. Forest Service property, the news release states.

Rescue unit arrived on the scene, assessed the patient, and asked for a medical helicopter to transport the male. MedEvac arrived a short time later but was unable to land in the steep terrain near the patient, the news release states.

Instead, the helicopter landed on Lefthand Canyon Drive, and the patient was carried to the road in a litter by Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, American Medical Response and Lefthand Fire Protection District personnel, the news release states.

The 16-year-old was then flown to the hospital in Denver. The rescue took about 1/1/2 hours, the news release states.
