The St. Vrain Historical Society announced last week that the Strawberry Festival in 2021, an event that usually occurs in May, has officially been canceled.

The Strawberry Festival and Pumpkin Pie Days have been a Longmont tradition since 1899.

Longmonters, at the time, chose to use pumpkins in a community celebration because it was the most uncommon crop grown in Longmont. The festival began with people in the community baking around 5,000 pumpkin pies and attending horse races in what is now Roosevelt Park.

Today both the Strawberry Festival and Pumpkin Pie Days include an antique and collectible show featuring dealers from all over the state.

Both events were canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. As Boulder County's COVID-19 restrictions have decreased the Boulder County Fairgrounds is able to begin opening up to events once again, states a Facebook post from the St. Vrain Historical Society.

However, the fairgrounds are still limited to 50 or fewer people indoors or 175 or fewer people outdoors.

"Because our dealers, their partners and our staff, and volunteers would exceed over 100--we are afraid that Strawberry Festival 2021 is no longer feasible at his point," states the post.

The news was not completely bad as the society is looking forward to June when restrictions are expected, once again, to decrease, allowing events to take place without limitations.

"With that news, we are looking forward to our Pumpkin Pie Days Vintage and Antique Market scheduled for October 9-10, 2021," the post states.
