On Sunday July 3, 2022 at approximately 11:31 AM, Boulder County Communications was notified of two climbers who had become stuck on the face of the First Flatiron in the area of Chautauqua Park, just west Boulder.
The two 28-year-old male climbers had been attempting to free solo the “Direct Route” on the First Flatiron when the rock became too hot and they became concerned that they would be unable to get off the rock safely. As a result, the two climbers called 911 requesting assistance.
Rescuers from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group were able to call the stuck climbers and get information about their location and verify that they were uninjured. A Ranger from the City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks was able to locate the climbers visually from the base of the First Flatiron. Rescuers hiked in and climbed up to the stuck climbers, securing them with harnesses and ropes before lowering them to the ground. The climbers again confirmed that they were uninjured and hiked out to the trailhead with Rangers where they were released on their own recognizance.
