On May 4 at approximately 11:47 a.m., a small Cessna 172 plane crashed near the Vance Brand Airport. According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, a student pilot was completing a solo flight and was preparing to land at the airport when he “suddenly lost engine power and was unable to land at the airport as planned.” No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
When the pilot lost engine power, he prepared to complete a “soft land emergency landing” and landed near North 75th Street and St. Vrain Road in a field, according to the sheriff’s office. The plane became “tangled” and “summersaulted over a fence,” then landed on its roof. The pilot was able to self-extricate and was uninjured.
The BCSO said that there is minor damage to the fields and the fence and the National Transportation Safety Board will not be responding to the incident. The office said that the Federal Aviation Administration was scheduled to respond on May 5 to investigate the crash before removing the plane from the crash site. The BCSO, Boulder County Emergency Services, Longmont Public Safety, Hygiene Fire Department, Lyons Fire Department, and AMR all responded to the scene to assist, according to the BCSO.
