Longmont’s Earth Day is back in person on Saturday after two years of being celebrated online due to COVID-19 restrictions, and organizer Ryan Schutz is anticipating a large turnout.
“We are super excited to be back, live and in-person,” Schutz, executive director of Sustainable Resilient Longmont, said. “If all the emails in my inbox are any indication, we will have a very busy day.”
The last time the full-fledged Longmont Earth Day Celebration was held in-person was in 2019 and 1,000 people showed up, Schutz said. The year before, the event drew 900 attendees.
“Maybe we will have 3,000 this year,” Schutz said. “That would be a nice problem to have.”
Sustainable Resilient Longmont is hosting the 8th annual Longmont Earth Day Celebration with events and activities at the Longmont Museum, on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The free, community event will feature an environmental education expo and programming for children and families throughout the day, culminating with a Climate Rally from 2-3 p.m., when participants will march for “Mother Earth” from the museum to the intersection of Main Street and Ken Pratt Boulevard for a brief demonstration, according to a Sustainable Resilient Longmont news release.
The family-friendly event will feature a concert with Boulder County legends Jeff & Paige, live birds of prey from the Raptor Education Foundation, a herd of baby goats, and Left Hand Creek clean up effort. There will also be arts and crafts led by local educators, hands-on composting education and seedling planting, the news release states.
Farm Eats Direct, The Magic Food Bus, the Cyclops food trucks will be on site for food and beverages.
Jeff & Paige will kick off the event at 10:15 a.m., followed by a welcome message from Longmont Mayor Joan Peck and the live BIrds of Prey Encounter with the Raptor Education Foundation at 11:15. Growing Gardens’ herd of adorable baby goats will be on site from 12:30 to 2 p.m., the new release states.
Organizers encourage attendees to ride bikes, carpool or use Longmont’s free bus lines to get to the event. The 324 Main Street bus line stops right in front of the Longmont Museum. The first 25 kids to arrive by bike get a free bike bell from the city of Longmont, the news release states.
The Longmont Museum & Cultural Center is located at 400 Quail Road in Longmont.
