Tattoos started out as a trend for sailors, prisoners and freaks. Slowly, artists, bartenders, mechanics, nurses and teachers started showing visible ink as they became a social norm. Getting “inked” has become an acceptable form of self-expression: many workplaces are allowing employees to show tattoos, fathers are inscribing their children’s names on their bodies and mothers are getting matching tattoos with their daughters. The once taboo practice is now a way of collecting affordable art.
The quality of tattoo art is stunning, surprising and makes you think twice about judging those carrying such striking imagery on their bodies. Tattoos are symbolic, and they often tell a story. Over 45 million people in the United States have at least one tattoo, and 1.6 trillion dollars is spent on tattoo work annually, in the U.S. alone. It’s time to recognize the pace of this intimate art form.
ThINK! is not just for seasoned, tattooed patrons. Anyone that can appreciate well-made art will be amazed by the intricate and beautiful work on display at this show. You don’t have to like tattoos or have tattoos to see the splendor in these artist’s work. The curiosities of those with virgin skin will be answered with a fine art display of this misunderstood craft; from new plays on tradition, abstraction and illustration.
The Firehouse Art Center will exhibit thINK! January 4-February 4, 2018. There will be a special reception for the exhibit during the Downtown Longmont Creative District’s monthly 2nd Friday event on Friday, Jan. 12 from 6-9 p.m. The Firehouse is located at 667 4th Ave., and they are open noon-5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
