Music is not only something that is pleasing to the ear, yet it could also be an artistic expression that can teach all sorts of lessons. On February 21st, Twin Peaks Charter Academy hosted their annual February Elementary Music Concert. It featured the first, and second, and third grade classes, who each had a chance to perform on stage by singing the songs that they worked on in class. For each grade, they had a theme under which their songs were categorized.
The concert began with a welcoming greeting from Catherine Mahoney, the school’s elementary music teacher, who helped conduct each grade during their performance. Throughout the concert, accompanist Bethany Mott played the piano for each grade’s performance.
First to perform were the first grade students, whose music theme was about how music can tell a story. Their collection of songs included: “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”, “There’s a Hole in my Bucket”, “Yankee Doodle”, “How Much is that Doggy in the Window”, and “What a Wonderful World”.
After the first grade performance, the second graders approached the stage to sing songs that were based on the Core Knowledge curriculum. Their songs featured: “Star Spangled Banner”, “Home on the Range”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “This Land is Your Land”, and “Erie Canal”.
The final musical presentation came from the third graders, and their theme was character. They sang these following songs: “Sing”, “Possibilities”, “The Best Things in Life”, “Simple Gifts”, and “Friends Forever”.
As the concert came to a close, Mrs. Mahoney thanked the audience for their presence; the staff and administration for all their hard work; and Mrs. Mott and the students for the effort they put into making this music program a delightful success. One of the students even stepped on stage and handed Mrs. Mott a bouquet of flowers, which is a tradition that takes place during every elementary concert to show gratitude for her dedication.
The concert was a delightful success - recognition was given, bows were made, and applause went all around. To follow up on upcoming events at Twin Peaks, check out the School-Wide Howl at http://www.twinpeakscharter.org/.
