Over Memorial Day weekend, a digital variable message board positioned on Nelson Road near Silver Creek High School displayed an unusual message: “BOOBS.” The sign displayed this message from May 25 until May 28.

According to Longmont’s public information officer, Rogelio Mares, the incident was an act of vandalism. He said that an unknown party hacked into the signing software on May 25 and remotely changed the message. The digital message board is owned by a contractor working for the city.

Mares said that city staff identified the issue over the weekend and the message was corrected on Wednesday morning. “Added security measures have been put into place so that the incident cannot be repeated,” Mares said.

The project manager advised the city that this was not an isolated case and that CDOT has experienced similar vandalism, according to Mares.
