The census count provides an accurate population count for our community. Why is this important for Longmont residents? Population numbers determine representation in Congress and the amount of federal funding that communities receive each year. In Longmont, that funding supports schools, housing, businesses, hospitals, roads, public works, and other programs vital to our community and its residents.
In addition to determining federal funding and congressional representation, census data help us understand the diversity of race, age, language and number of people per household in our community. This information helps guide decisions about implementing programs and services that are inclusive of all and that can best serve the specific needs of Longmont residents. It also gives us an opportunity to understand and value community diversity as a community asset. Building an inclusive community is a priority in Longmont, and a complete count is critical to this effort.
One of Longmont’s strongest attributes is its diversity; it increases our resilience, enriches us culturally, and makes us a welcoming place to live, visit, and do business. The census gives us a snapshot of who we are today and helps us plan for the future. We can put programs in place that support our population as it ages, our schoolchildren as they navigate career choices, and our young professionals and entrepreneurs who will bolster our workforce and attract investment in our community. We are all part of what makes Longmont a wonderful city – and we all count in keeping it that way!
