One person is dead and two others are being hospitalized with serious injuries after a head-on collision at U.S. 287 and Yellowstone Road Tuesday afternoon north of Longmont.

A 2000 Nissan SUV was northbound on U.S. 287 about 4:48p.m. when it went into the southbound lane and collided head-to-head with a 2013 Toyota pickup, said Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Josh Lewis.

The driver of the Nissan was a 48-year-old female from Broomfield who was declared dead at the scene, Lewis said. A passenger in the Nissan — a seven-year-old male — sustained serious injuries and was transported to Children’s Hospital in Denver, Lewis said.

The 25-year-old female driver of the Toyota was taken to Longmont United Hospital with serious injuries, he said.

The crash closed U.S. 287 in both directions for several hours.

Lewis said neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the collision. Speed is being looked at as a possible cause, Lewis said, adding he did not know if snowy conditions at the time played a role.
