Improvements to the City of Longmont’s Affolter Neighborhood Park, 1400 Holly Ave., are slated to begin Monday, Aug. 10, and work is expected to continue until the spring of 2021, weather and circumstances permitting. The improvements, part of the City’s life-cycle replacement and park renewal program, were identified as high-priority needs as part of the 2014 Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan, in which the community voiced a strong desire to “Take Care of What We Have.”

Work includes:

  • replacing the restroom/shelter building in its current location.
  • improving the ballfield:
    • constructing a new concrete sidewalk to connect the main path to the ballfield and create an accessible route to the dugouts and spectator seating.
    • installing new fencing and gates in front of the dugouts.
    • adding new dugout benches.
    • regrading the infields, planting a new infield mix, and re-edging the field.
  • realigning the entry path at the corner of Holly Avenue & S. Judson Avenue to create an accessible entrance and a more open view into the park.
  • improving the tennis and basketball court entrances to be more accessible by creating ramps, adding railings, and adjusting gates with ADA compliant hardware.
  • removing the asphalt along S. Sherman Street, east of the tennis courts, and installing trees along the street. replacing the chain-link fence along S. Judson Street with a wood-rail fence.
  • adding new park signage, trash and recycling containers, and picnic tables. making minor landscape and irrigation improvements.

The project is being funded with City Park & Greenway Maintenance Fee Funds and City Public Improvement Funds designated for accessibility upgrades required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Anticipated cost of the project is around $850,000. Project information and updates will be provided on the City’s website at http://bit.ly/park-renewal.
