Arthur Stanley Cushing, long-term resident of Loveland, CO, passed away on October 3rd after a brief illness.  He was ready to go and be with his wife, Sarah, who died in 2018.

Arthur “Art” was born in Milton, MA on February 6, 1928, to Albert S. and Bertha Cushing.  He was an industrious and smart kid, spending summers selling ice cream at Fenway Park from a cooler he mounted on his bike and skipping a grade of school to finish high school just before his draft number came up.  Growing up on the water in Massachusetts, he opted to join the Navy to see the world and did his term as a Pharmacist Mate Third Class in Philadelphia.

Out of the Navy at 19, he finagled a job on a schooner to Cuba, danced with the senoritas, got marooned in the gulf, got rescued, and got towed to Cancun.  After many more misadventures, he arrived home in early 1950 and re-connected with Sarah Magdalene Conger, a nurse he had met previously, and they were married the day after Christmas that year.

Art and Sarah had 5 children, Stanley (1952 - ) of Broomfield, Ronald (1954 - ) of Castle Pines, Janis Foote (1956 – 2011) of Des Moines, Lisa Holmes (1958 - ) of Chicago, and Roger (1961 – 2011) of Thornton.  Art brought his young family to Loveland in 1954, bought a set of blue-prints and started building houses.  Before he was done, he had built over 100 houses and 60 apartments, jump-starting the housing growth of early Loveland on 29th street facing Loveland Lake.  14 houses in a row still stand there as a testament to his motto, proudly displayed on every one of his yellow Ford pickups, “Every Home a Work of Art.”

Art had several passions in his life.  First, his Seventh-day Adventist church.  He lived his faith and supported both the Loveland and Campion churches.  His philanthropic gifting dug wells and built churches in India and Africa as well as in Colorado and benefitted charities as diverse as Salvation Army and JDRF.  Motorcycles were his escape – riding his last time on his 90th birthday.  And mostly he was passionate about Sarah, his soulmate for 68 years.

Arthur is survived by his three children, Stan, Ron & Lisa, his grand-children Chelsa Simpson, Mindy Riter, Bryn Rath, Kendra Watkins, Briana Cushing, Chance Deckard, Christian Butler and Ksana Uhrich.  Art also leaves behind 12 great grandchildren: Ethan, Cade, Tanner, Eli, Max, Jude, Evynne, Angelina, Chimena, Cameron, Fletcher and Remi.

The family will host a viewing this Saturday, October 9, from 2:00 – 4:00 at the Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 Lincoln Avenue, Loveland, CO, 80537.  There will also be a memorial service later in the year.

In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate to one of Art’s favorite charities: ADRA (the Adventist Development and Relief Agency International).
