Caroline Howery, 96, died on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Caroline was born on November 3, 1924 in Middleton, Idaho to her parents, Dick and Ada Story. She was one of ten children, always small and slight for her age while growing up. But she was proud that she could run very fast. Caroline always credited her longevity to the two-mile walk she had to make to school and back during those early years. Eventually her older brothers started going off to war, and she was soon to meet her own dashing soldier, a member of the Army Air Corps. They attended the same church service one Sunday near Gowen Field in Boise, ID where he was based. On Oct. 1, 1943 Caroline married Warren Howery. Her young family grew while Caroline and her husband lived in Nebraska and Wyoming before moving to northern Colorado. They had several residences in Loveland during the 1950’s before settling in the metro Denver area in the early 1960’s. Caroline held various domestic positions. She volunteered for years at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver, and was active in bowling leagues with her husband. She liked to read and do puzzle books and prided herself on being a good speller. Caroline valued family above all else, and loved to attend the many reunions her extended family held throughout the western U.S. Caroline moved to Fort Collins in 2015, and after two years of independent living, she became a resident of Good Samaritan Society, Fort Collins Village. There, her sweet disposition and kind ways made her a favorite among the other residents and staff alike. She is survived by daughter Phyllis Pekari (Rich) of Fort Collins, daughter Karrie Simmons of Central Point, OR., son Barry Howery of Wheat Ridge, son Kevin Howery of Arvada and sister Goldene Durrington (Jim) of Sacramento, CA. Caroline had 9 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S. HWY 287, Ft. Collins, CO., on Wednesday, April 21, at 11:00 a.m. The family requests donations to Good Samaritan Society, Fort Collins Village, in lieu of flowers. Interment will be scheduled at a later date at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
