Harlan Ray Terning, age 75, of Loveland, Colorado, passed away on February 3, 2021. Harlan was born in Hutchinson, Minnesota, in 1945, to Reynold Terning and Elinor Terning, and he grew up in Cokato, Minnesota. Harlan proudly served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Navy’s Construction Battalion (the Seabees). Construction was a lifelong passion for Harlan, and he was a gifted craftsman. After returning from Vietnam, Harlan attended Colorado State University, where he studied construction and vocational education. He then embarked on an outstanding career in vocational education and later as the owner of Viking Construction in Cedaredge, Colorado, where he constructed numerous homes as well as the church building for All Saints Lutheran Church, of which he was a long-time member. Harlan’s family was blessed by his passion for woodworking through the years (since making sawdust was his hobby!), and they have many cherished heirlooms that he built for them.
Harlan is preceded in death by his parents and Sandy (Nelson) Terning of Dassel, Minnesota, his wife of 44 years who passed away in 2011. Harlan is survived by his wife Judy Richardson of Loveland, Colorado. Harlan was so fortunate to meet Judy later in life, and they had a loving marriage of seven years before his death. Harlan and Judy are active members of King of Glory Lutheran Church in Loveland, Colorado, and they enjoyed camping as well as many trips abroad and around the United States. Harlan is also survived by: his son Chad Terning of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Chad’s wife Heather Terning, their two children Ayden (16) and Kajsa (14); Harlan’s daughter Carrie (Terning) Orcutt of Centennial, Colorado, her husband Jamie Orcutt, and their sons Noah (14) and Andrew (12); Judy’s son Greg Weisz of Cheyenne, Wyoming, his wife Teri, and their children Eli and Jacob ; and Judy’s daughter Julie Weisz of Denver, Colorado, and her husband Tom.
Harlan was a kind, humble and hard-working man of faith who will be deeply missed by his friends and family. We were all blessed to have him in our lives.
Private family services will be held.
