Harold Ray Dunn, age 90, passed away January 28, 2023.
Harold was born April 26,1932, in Sterling, CO, to Robert F. Dunn and Rose Asnicar Dunn. He had one brother Robert (Bob) Dunn.
Harold’s childhood years were spent in the north Denver area. The family later moved to Vallejo, CA, before settling in Aurora, CO, where Harold graduated from Aurora High School in 1950. Shortly after graduation, Harold enlisted in the US Navy. Following his discharge, Harold came home to Aurora and, taking advantage of the GI Bill, enrolled at Denver University. He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Hultquist, on June 5, 1955. They had two daughters, Vicki (Dennis-deceased) Brzezicki and Dana (Dave) Janssen. They have five grandchildren; Corey (Cara) Brzezicki, Brian (Laura) Brzezicki, Lindsay (Tim) Burchfield, Abbey (Joey) Steger, Nick (Dana) Janssen, and eight great grandchildren.
Harold graduated from DU with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He began his teaching career with Denver Public Schools at Montclair Elementary School teaching at the fifth grade level. He received his master’s degree in guidance counseling from UNC in 1968. In later years he developed an interest in teacher advocacy and served as president of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association from 1978-1981. He was also a lifetime member of both the CEA and NEA and continued to do association work until his retirement. Tucson, AZ, was the destination for their “snowbird” years. Harold was musically gifted. He was a trained vocalist who sang in church choir and also performed as a soloist for weddings and other occasions. He played piano/keyboard and was self taught on saxophone, guitar, and ukulele.
Coaching youth league football was another passion for Harold. He coached the Falcons and Orediggers teams in Denver for several years. He would be remembered by his players as a tough but effective coach.
Harold was known for his masterful use of language, witty sense of humor and talent for writing; his compositions becoming treasured keepsakes for his family.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Harold’s name can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
