1921 - 2020

Hazel Anna Homm Langendoerfer was born March 25, 1921 at the family home north of Burlington. She was the 4th child of George and Clara (Fleer) Homm. Her grandparents homesteaded in the Bonny Dam area. She grew up on the farm and attended Newton School. She loved school and was a student her entire life, loving reading, current events, and travel. She could be considered an original homeschool student, having parents who led Literary, a curriculum including community plays, spelling bees, book reviews, debate and more. She was well entertained in her childhood by playing games of indoor and outdoor nature. She played baseball and learned her love for the game from her family. She, in turn, taught grandsons and great grandson’s to play, spending hours throwing balls for them to catch and bat. She was a card player and a table game lover to her last days. She loved to attend the athletic events of all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. At 17, Hazel was proprietor of a small store on Highway 385 near her home . She married Ernest Langendoerfer and worked with him in his grocery store in Idalia until they moved to the Bar-T Ranch in 1943. They ranched, farmed, and raised three daughters there before retiring to a farm outside of Burlington, her current home, in 1971. They enjoyed 15 years together there before Ernie preceded her to Heaven, just before their 45th wedding anniversary.

After completing her work as a homemaker and rancher’s wife, she began her career as a CNA and worked at Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital for 17 years. Hazel was also a part of the local Toastmaster’s Group, served on the Carousel Restoration Board and the Burlington Museum Board. She volunteered as the Creamery educator at Old Town in Burlington during various celebration days. Hazel loved the adventure and education of travel. She and Ernie traveled extensively, then she accompanied her children on domestic and foreign trips, a delight in her life. She was a member of Hope Congregational Church for 55+ years. She loved the Lord, studied her Bible, and was an adult Sunday School teacher and an active member of the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed quilting as a part of that group. She was a seamstress, an excellent cook for family, friends, roundup and harvest crews. She and Ernie were active in 4-H with their daughters. They loved dancing and played cards with family, friends, and neighbors throughout their lives. Hazel was a counselor, encourager, and confidant to many. She was completely devoted to family.

She taught her family the value of hard work, integrity and forgiveness. She spent endless hours with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, giving them her undivided attention, interested in each of their individual endeavors. She was willing to play any game and cook any food they requested. Hazel is survived by her three daughters, Sharon (Curt) Boell, Beverly (Larry) Shively, and Sandra (Roland) Strobel; four grandchildren, DeLain (Brian) Stotts, Dain (Sara) Strobel, Charles (Katie) Shively, and Ernest Shively, 11 great grandchildren, Harris, Mollie, Trey, Ty, and Tori Stotts, Ben and Keenan Shively, Deaj, Levi, Jace, and Kai Strobel and 4 great great grandchildren, Easton and Andrew Stotts, Brooklynn Breuer and Austynn Balladez, nieces, nephews, and many friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernie, his siblings, her parents, and her siblings, Gilbert and Clifford Homm and Velma Gerber. Memorial gifts may be made to Hope Congregational Church in Hazel’s memory at The Bank of Burlington, 410 14th St, Burlington, CO 80807.
