Thelma Dawson, a Broomfield resident since 1961, died Thursday, August 24, 2023 at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Dawson, as well as her parents, two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Dawson, of Alameda, CA; son and daughter-in-law Roger and Candye Dawson, Alamosa, CO; granddaughter Gina Boone and husband Matt; grandson William (Bucky) Logan and wife Laura; and great-grandchildren Megan, Jordan and Liam Boone, and Brody Logan. Her extended family includes many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Thelma’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 11 AM at the Tri-City Baptist Church, 6953 W. 92nd Lane, Westminster, CO 80021.

In lieu of flowers, Thelma requested that donations be made to the Tri-City Baptist Church Food Bank at the address above, Broomfield Fellowship in Serving Humanity (FISH), 12 Garden Center, Suite 110, Broomfield, CO 80020, or the food bank of the donor’s choice.

Longtime Broomfield residents remember Thelma as a bank teller, first at Broomfield Bank and over the years through the bank’s various name changes. She also sang with the Broomfield Swing Choir from 1961-1971. After retirement she volunteered for FISH.

She loved music and directed many church choirs. Johnny Mathis was her favorite singer and she was delighted to finally see him perform in person with the Colorado Symphony. Her son Roger is a musician and she loved to hear him play the guitar, either solo or with bands. She was also a reader who enjoyed the novels written by her daughter Janet.

Thelma was an avid tennis player who learned the game when she was ten, playing on the tennis team in high school and college. As an adult, she competed in local tournaments. She also competed in the National Senior Games, winning numerous medals, including two golds in mixed and women’s doubles in 2009, at the age of 85. After that, she reluctantly gave up playing tennis. At her house, however, the Tennis Channel was always on and she always watched all the grand slam tournaments.

Thelma was born in Jefferson, OK, youngest of six children of Katie McSwain Metcalf and Woodard D. Metcalf. The family later moved to Purcell, OK, where the Metcalfs owned movie theaters. She graduated from Purcell High School in 1942 and attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, where she studied music. In 1943, while selling tickets in the family’s movie theater in Purcell, she met Don Dawson, who was stationed at the nearby Navy base in Norman. They were married on March 5, 1944 at the First Baptist Church in Purcell and remained married for 61 years until Don’s death on November 11, 2005.
