Flagstaff Academy Charter School adopts new safety measures

School security is a topic on many people’s minds. Flagstaff Academy Charter School announced new measures to ensure the safety and security of its students.

The charter school recently received a grant in partnership with the Safe Communities Safe Schools Program at the University of Colorado Boulder. The program will bring new training, technical expertise and a data-driven process to identify the school’s needs. From there the school can create action plans and support students and staff, a news release from the school states.

On Thursday, the school announced that it had hired Tim Rumsey as its new School Safety Supervisor beginning in the fall.

Rumsey has over 28 years of experience in the military, law enforcement, special forces and on-campus school safety. He also spent 12 years as a life coach focusing on mental health and is a licensed addiction counselor.

“I am honored to be a part of the Flagstaff Academy Charter School team and am committed to ensuring that every student and staff member feels safe, supported and valued," Rumsey said. "I believe that strong partnerships and communication between schools, our communities and law enforcement are essential to creating a culture of safety and trust, and I am excited to contribute to this important work."

Part of Rumsey’s job will be to work with school administrators, local law enforcement and community organizations to develop safety plans for the school.

In addition to hiring Rumsey, the school also adopted the SchoolSafe Radio Operability technology. This technology allows the school’s radio system to communicate directly with first responders during an emergency.

"Flagstaff Academy is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff," said Flagstaff Academy Executive Director Wayne Granger. "The SchoolSafe Radio Operability technology is a crucial addition to our comprehensive security system, which will enable us to respond quickly and effectively in the event of an emergency."
