Guidepost Montessori school in Longmont underwent an investigation by the Department of Human Services on Oct. 19 after an allegation reported the school had alcohol on the premises.

During the investigation staff at the school made “false and misleading statements” that alcohol had been removed from the property following an initial investigation. A licensing specialist saw alcohol in the staff lounge and the snack kitchen during a second investigation.

The report revealed other concerns including children’s accessibility to the alcohol, the consumption of alcohol during working hours, a broken gate on the preschool playground and children under three years old being combined in classrooms with older children. All these concerns were unfounded, according to the report.

The school will be submitted for Adverse Action, according to Ian McKenzie, the spokesperson for the Colorado Department of of Early Childhood.

Adverse Action is defined as “any action by the counties or their designee, which adversely affects the person’s eligibility for or right to services provided or authorized under the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program,” according to DHS.

The school’s staff will be required to provide a written response on how they corrected the violation. The school will also receive monthly visits and inspections by specialists to ensure the violations don’t happen again, McKenzie said.
