St. Vrain Valley Schools eagerly await Boulder County Public Health’s decision on mask mandates.

BCPH will convene Monday to decide if the county will continue county-wide mask mandates. Current mandates require people over the age of 2 to wear a mask indoors regardless of vaccination status.

The public health order requires schools to require mask-wearing.

Surrounding counties and schools have discontinued the use of masks indoors.

During the Wednesday school board meeting, Superintendent Don Haddad said he would support a decision to discontinue mask use in SVVSD since the district’s COVID case numbers are low.

“I see the numbers at such a low level right now that I encourage them (BCPH) to take a good hard look at it,” Haddad said.

SVVSD reports 53 students and seven staff across the district who have active confirmed cases. This data is updated each weekday. The district also reports 86 students who have been quarantined as of Friday. To date in the 2021-22 school year, 4359 students and 793 staff have tested positive for the virus.

Haddad said he will be ready to communicate any updates to the policy, “probably within a day of when the decision is made,” with staff and partents, adding he plans to continue to meet with BCPH and “express that the numbers in St. Vrain are very, very low, extremely low at this point and see where they are in terms of acknowledging that every other county is making the decision to drop the mask mandate … We need to make sure we are able to follow suit if they are able to make that decision.”
