ArtWalk Longmont has plans for downtown on summer Saturdays

“We are thrilled to be able to adapt this much-loved event so that, even during this challenging time, our community can enjoy art by local artists while being safe and healthy. The arts are needed more now than ever,” Elaine Waterman, Firehouse Art Center’s executive director, stated in a news release.

ArtWalk Longmont and the Firehouse Art Center this week announced the Summer on the Streets 2020 schedule.

The events, which will be Saturdays through Sept. 12, include weekly art markets and music, as well as kids’ activities and special events.

ArtWalk will take advantage of the increased outdoor space created by lane closures on Main Street to allow for social distancing. The city on July 6 closed a lane of Main in each direction between Third and Sixth avenues, allowing for downtown businesses to use adjacent parking and the lanes themselves for expanded sales, event or dining space.

“Art can heal and connect us,” Elaine Waterman, Firehouse Art Center’s executive director, stated in a news release. “We are thrilled to be able to adapt this much-loved event so that, even during this challenging time, our community can enjoy art by local artists while being safe and healthy. The arts are needed more now than ever.”

Waterman also noted that ArtWalk Strongmont Virtual Art Market is available to satisfy those that want to remain at home and those that are looking for a safer option for live events.

“We are giving artists, performers, art lovers, and future art lovers a chance to choose a virtual market or a weekend live outdoor market but in a smaller setting making crowd control and social distancing easier,” she stated in the release.

The next virtual market is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 22. Artists can register to participate here.
