The Boulder County Coroner’s Office (BCCO) shared a press release on September 10 in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, informing the public of various community resources that may help prevent suicide, as well as sharing its online data dashboard, which provides up-to-date information on causes of death, including suicide.

According to the database, the suicide death rate in Boulder County has trended downward each year since 2021. In 2021, 75 deaths were ruled as suicides by the BCCO and in 2024, the number decreased to 54. So far this year, the BCCO has recorded 44 deaths by suicide.

In a post made on X, Governor Jared Polis said that “Colorado’s youth suicide rate is now at its lowest level since 2007 — proof that progress is possible when we work together.” He also shared Colorado’s Suicide and Crisis lifeline, which can be reached by dialling 988.

In its press release, the BCCO also shared information about the 988 Colorado Mental Health Line, as well as Rise Against Suicide, a youth-focused suicide prevention nonprofit that connects people 19 years or younger with therapy.

“Boulder County is fortunate to have a 24/7 walk-in mental health crisis clinic at 3180 Airport Road in Boulder operated by Clinica Family Health and Wellness, formerly Mental Health Partners,” BCCO said. “This facility is open to anyone experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis, regardless of insurance or place of residence. You do not have to be a Clinica patient or client to get help for yourself or a loved one.”

The BCCO said that suicide is a “deeply personal and complex issue” that affects individuals, families, and communities.

“I recognize the profound impact suicide has on our community,” said Boulder County Coroner Jeff Martin. “By raising awareness of suicide, and sharing resources available to anyone that needs help, I hope to foster understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts to immediately get help.”

World Suicide Prevention Day occurs on September 10 annually and is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented. It was first created in 2003.
