Early Tuesday morning, an officer from the Lafayette Police Department fired their weapon after being fired upon. The incident resulted in the death of one suspect who was identified by the Boulder County Coroner today.

Ethan Huiras, a 20-year-old man, was part of two people who stole a vehicle in Lafayette early Tuesday morning.

Huiras and another man were driving a stolen Toyota Camry when it alerted an Automated License Plate Reader in the area of S. Boulder Road and Dixon Avenue. Lafayette Police Officers discovered the Camry at a nearby Circle K gas station. The two men were leaving the store when they saw the officers arrive.

The two men began running from the police. Huiras ran back to the Camry and began firing a handgun at the officers hitting one in the leg. The condition of the officer was stable Tuesday afternoon.

The officer returned gunfire and later Huiras was found dead inside the car.

The incident is under investigation by the Boulder County Incident Team and the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
