Longmont Public Safety on Thursday warned residents of a scam in which callers claim to be police officers. The calls spoof department phone numbers and appear legitimate, police stated in a Thursday Facebook post

Callers identify themselves as Longmont officers or detectives and tell them there is a warrant for their missing a court date or because they are needed as a material witness,  police stated.

Police are asking residents who receive such calls to hang up and dial 303-651-8555 or 303-651-8501 to ask for the specific officer before providing any information over the phone.

Caller ID spoofing scams are not uncommon. In 2018, 70% of phone scam calls nationwide used neighborhood spoofing, appearing to come from a local number, according to consumer website comparitech.com.
