Cassidy Lemmons, a Longmont resident, was found guilty of two counts of child abuse — knowingly/recklessly causing death and one count of child abuse — neglect causing death on Thursday. These charges are in response to the death of her foster son, Thomas Boyles who died in April 2019.
On April 22, 2019, Longmont Public Safety responded to a 911 call in the 3200 block of Lake Park Way. When first responders arrived they saw Lemmon performing CPR on Boyles. The paramedics also noted that Boyles had visible bruising on his body and face. Although, Boyles was taken to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, he died on April 24 due to his injuries.
Boyle’s injuries included “intracranial hemorrhage, multiple rib fractures, liver and spleen injuries,” according to a police report. Boyles also suffered a subdural brain bleed and a spinal fracture. Doctors also reported that several of his ribs were in different stages of healing.
Lemmon faced between 16 and 48 years in state prison. The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office asked for the maximum amount of time to be served, however, the judge sentenced Lemmon to 40 years in a state prison.
“This defendant extinguished the life of a beautiful little boy. From the beginning of this case, the members of the Longmont Police Department and our prosecution team were determined to secure justice for Thomas. They did an outstanding job with this very tragic case; but for the incredibly hard work and skill of the detectives and the prosecution team, led by prosecutors Christine Rinke and Fred Johnson, this outcome would not have been possible. We are glad that the judge imposed this lengthy sentence for abusing and killing little Thomas.,” said Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty.
