The City of Boulder is accepting applications for a $106 individual rebate or $325 family rebate on food taxes for eligible residents. Applications must be received or postmarked by June 30. Individuals who were over 62 years old on January 1, 2024 and those with a disability are eligible if they meet the financial criteria. Families are eligible for the rebate if they had at least one child under the age of 18 for the full 2024 calendar year.

In order to qualify, the income for a single individual must not exceed $51,100. The income limit increases by $7,300 for each additional member of the household. A family of four must have earned less than $73,000 in 2024 to be eligible for the rebate. Individuals without a permanent residency can qualify if they are receiving services from a city-recognized homelessness services agency. Individuals and families must have resided in Boulder for the entire 2024 calendar year to qualify.

Since 2014, the food tax rebate program has paid out $1 million to 2,468 different applicants. In 2022, $40,000 was paid to families in the program, $9,500 to individuals with disabilities, and $53,000 to adults over 62 years of age. Those numbers all increased in 2023 with $80,000 being paid to families, $15,000 to people with disabilities, and $68,000 to residents over 62 years old. The total payout of $163,000 in 2023 was a 57-percent increase from the previous year.

The city approved 1,093 applications in 2023 and denied 148.
