Saza Lee left his home to go on a bike ride in Sept. 2021 and wasn’t heard from again. His body was found at Sandstone Ranch on Feb. 13. The Boulder County Coroner's report suggests Lee died by suicide.
Lee’s autopsy was performed on Feb. 16 by Pathologist Meredith A. Frank M.D. His body was identified by using dental records.
The coroner discovered a gunshot wound to the back of Lee’s head with gunshot residue present on his body.
“Based on the postmortem examination findings and history available to me at this time, it is my opinion that Saza Lee, a 55-year-old male, died as the result of a gunshot wound of the head. The manner of death, in my opinion, is suicide,” Frank wrote in her report.
Lee’s body also had superficial wounds to his upper extremities and possible postmortem lacerations to the left side of his head and left leg, according to the report.
Lee was 55 years old when he went missing after not returning from an evening bike ride. His wife reported Lee’s normal route took him along the St. Vrain Greenway to Sandstone Ranch.
Since Lee left his home — in the area of Main Street and Mountain View — of his own accord, police did not investigate his case as a missing person. They also did not consider him a victim of a random crime.
“The Department of Public Safety received the coroner’s report this afternoon and it has been referred to the lead investigator. Preliminarily, the Boulder County Coroner’s findings of Saza Lee’s passing is in line with our initial investigation and there is no indication of foul play. Our sympathy goes out to his family and friends,” said Robin Ericson, communications and marketing director for Longmont Public Safety.
