'Clean Up, Green Up' lets residents join in effort to keep Longmont beautiful

A joint effort between the Public Works & Natural Resources and Parks & Recreation departments, the citywide project has been held for 25 consecutive years. After signing a release form, volunteers can choose a trail, park, open space or neighborhood to clean up.

Longmont’s Clean Up, Green Up campaign launched today to recruit volunteers to provide a little TLC to the city’s parks, trails and neighborhoods.

The campaign, which will run through Oct. 10, was originally slated to take place in April but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The delay didn’t dull interest though — more than 50 volunteers had already registered by the time the beautification project kicked off with a three-hour event this morning at the Longmont Public Works Sunset Campus.

A joint effort between the Public Works & Natural Resources and Parks & Recreation departments, the citywide project has been held for 25 consecutive years. After signing a release form, volunteers can choose a trail, park, open space or neighborhood to clean up. At the kickoff event, maps of the eligible areas were on display and garbage bags were provided, along with directions for proper disposal.

Among the groups helping with the cleanup are members of Central Longmont Presybterian Church congregation and youth groups, as well as individual community members. Lynn Hersberger, who moved to Longmont in January to be closer to her children, was happy to sign up.

“I wanted to get involved,” Hersberger said. “And do something for the environment.”

With plenty of cleaning up to be done around Longmont, more volunteers for the campaign are welcome. Information can be found at the city’s website, or by reaching out to the campaign coordinator Lore Blattner.
