A stretch of South Coffman Street will be closed for three weeks starting Wednesday as part of ongoing improvements to Pike Road.

The closure, which will span about a block from Pike Road to Utah Way, is needed to ensure the safety of crews reconstructing South Coffman Street as part of the Pike Road Improvements project, according to a news release from the city of Longmont.

Local traffic and residents of Coffman Street between Pike Road and Utah Way will be granted access from Quebec Avenue or Missouri Avenue north of Pike Road, the city stated in the release. Left and right turns from Pike Road onto South Coffman Street will be prohibited. Emergency services and Waste Services collection trucks will be granted access from the north, according to the city.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid using Pike Road and South Coffman Street during the work.

The goals of the Pike Road Improvements project are to improve vehicular, cyclist and pedestrian safety; enhance multimodal transportation; and repair and maintain aging asphalt pavement, according to the project website

The overall project is expected to cost $3.98 million, with funding coming from the city’s 3/4-cent Street Fund Sales and Use Tax.

Pike Road consists of one lane of travel in each direction with left- and right-turn lanes at intersecting streets except for Coffman, and doesn’t include on-street bike lanes.

The project will add left-turn lanes at Coffman Street in both directions of travel on Pike Road.

The Colorado Department of Transportation identified the need for an additional left-turn lane from northbound Main Street to westbound Pike Road to eliminate backups, and a new westbound lane will be added to Pike between South Main and South Coffman streets, for which CDOT will reimburse the city up to $685,000, according to a post on the project website.

Work also will include adding on-street bike lanes for the length of Pike Road, installing sidewalks, curbs and gutters, medians and traffic-calming devices, as well as a traffic light at Pike and South Coffman Street. The project also includes realigning South Pratt Parkway at Pike Road.

Construction began in March and is expected to last seven months, weather permitting. Learn more about the project here. Those with questions about the project can call the 720-526-2044 or email [email protected].
