A crash near the 17th Avenue and Alpine Street intersection resulted in the death of a 28-year-old woman and serious injury to a 3-year-old boy.

The incident occurred yesterday around 6 p.m, according to a news release issued by Longmont Public Safety.

The initial investigation revealed a Ford Explorer, driven by the 28-year-old woman, was traveling eastbound on 17th Avenue. At the same time a 19-year-old woman, headed north on Alpine Street and driving a Subaru Forester, entered the intersection resulting in a front-to-side collision, or T.

The collision caused the Ford Explorer to roll over, ejecting the woman and a 3-year-old boy from the car. The woman died from fatal injuries at the scene. The boy was taken to a Denver hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the news release.

“Neither is believed to have been wearing a seatbelt or properly secured in a child safety seat,” the release states.

The 19-year-old woman suffered minor injures and was able to leave on her own from the scene.

A full investigation is being conducted to determine which vehicle had the right-of-way at the signaled intersection and if drugs, alcohol or speed were contributing factors in the crash. Officials expect the investigation to take two to three weeks.

The initial investigation findings suggest the driver of the Ford Explorer failed to stop at a red light before entering the intersection, according to the news release.

Longmont Police are looking for more information about the crash. Those with information are encouraged to contact CSO Greg Noyes at 303-774-4458 or [email protected]

“The Longmont Department of Public Safety would like to remind all drivers and occupants that seatbelts and child restraint devices save lives,” states the news release.
