Prom season is once again approaching and the Longmont Public Library needs help to get teens prepared.
For many teenagers, prom night is an exciting night to get dressed up and have a night of fun with friends.
However, according to an article in USA Today, teenagers can spend an average of $600 on prom. That figure was estimated in 2017, with inflation and interruptions in the supply chain figures for 2023 could come in between $150-$2,000, according to Amarra.com.
The basic costs for prom include the event tickets, a dress or tux rental, shoes and accessories. Some teens choose to embellish the event with promposals, hair and makeup, flowers, travel and more.
The cost of formal wear can be prohibitive to some teenagers.
“We think that every student who wants to attend a school function or other fancy dress situation should be able to,” a news release from the Longmont Public Library stated.
The library is asking the community to consider donating gently used evening attire that is appropriate for teenagers to wear to prom or other formal or semi-formal occasions.
Donations can include dresses, skirts, tuxes, suits, bow ties, dress slacks, sports coats and more. However, the library is in desperate need of non-dress items like suits and tuxes. Shoes and other accessories are also welcome.
The items can be a range of sizes and styles but must be dry cleaned with the dry cleaning tags still attached.
The deadline to donate is March 19. All donations should be taken to the Children’s and Teens reference desk at the Longmont Public Library, located at 409 Fourth Ave.
Any donations not selected will be donated to local charities, according to the news release.
