The Longmont City Council asked the city of Longmont staff to prepare an ordinance to approve compensation increases for the council in February. On Tuesday, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would increase the council’s compensation after the 2025 election.

Council members receive $1,000 a month and the mayor earns $1,500. The proposed ordinance would raise the amount by $500 monthly for each position for future council members.

The ordinance also allows the compensation to be adjusted every two years, after the election of council members. The adjustment will align with the Cost-of-Living Adjustment provided by the Social Security Administration.

The total cost for the city would be $132,000 annually beginning in 2026.

A second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for April 9.
