CITY OF LONGMONT | Mayor and City Council
We are utterly devastated by the violent attack on a peaceful vigil last Sunday in Boulder. This horrifying act targeted the Jewish community and wounded the conscience of our broader community. This heinous assault strikes at the heart of our values here in Longmont. An attack on one of our neighboring communities is an attack on all of us. What happened was not only unjustifiable violence; it was an affront to our shared values of peace, dignity, and inclusion.
To those who were physically injured, we extend our heartfelt prayers and deepest wishes for a full and swift recovery. And to all who carry unseen wounds – fear, trauma, and grief – we send our love and support. We recognize your pain are committed to ensuring our community is a place where all can feel safe, seen, and supported.
We must continue to stand up and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the rights, safety and dignity of all people, especially those targeted for their faith, identity, or beliefs. This includes those who gather in peace to call for justice, pray for those suffering, and an end to all forms of oppression. We must also speak out clearly and forcefully against those who sow the seeds of hatred and violence. Longmont stands united in rejecting antisemitism, hate and violence in every form. We are committed to nurturing community through compassion, mutual understanding, and a shared commitment to a more just and inclusive future.
Our strength as a society lies in our willingness to come together, despite our differences, with empathy, courage, and a shared belief in justice. In this moment, we offer our full support to the Jewish community in Boulder, in Boulder County, and here in Longmont. You are not alone; Longmont stands with you.
