Poetry As The Means We Need: A bilingual poetry workshop and reading with Alejandro Jimenez

Alejandro Jimenez, 2021 National Mexican Poetry Slam Champion, will be conducting a 45-minute bilingual poetry workshop followed by a 45-minute bilingual poetry reading at the Longmont Civic Center on April 18. You may sign up for one or both sessions. The workshop will be from 6 to 6:45 p.m. followed by the reading from 7:15 to 8 p.m. Register for the poetry workshop and/or reading here. Alejandro Jimenez is a formerly-undocumented immigrant, poet, writer, educator, and avid distance runner from Colima, Mexico, living in New Mexico. He is the 2021 Mexican National Poetry Slam Champion, a two-time National Poetry Slam Semi-Finalist (U.S.), multiple time TEDx Speaker and an Emmy-nominated poet, whose work centers around cultural identity, immigrant narratives, masculinity, memory, and the intersections of them all. His self-published book, Moreno. Prieto. Brown. (2017), has sold more than 2,000 copies and has been incorporated in curricula across various school districts.

Interview Preparation Virtual Class

Learn how to interview successfully using a simple formula to showcase your skills and how to prepare good answers to the tough interview questions. To sign up for this Workforce Boulder County workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 14, go to connectingcoloroado.com, create an account and look under Workshops. A link to the workshop will be sent to you the day before the workshop with instructions on how to join the virtual meeting. 

Art & Sip: Needle Felting on Soap

Felted soaps are a functional soap with an artistic scrubby built in! This Art & Sip class at the Longmont Museum on April 14 includes an unscented goat’s milk soap, wool, and tools to complete a single felted soap. Use the felted pouch again and again by replacing the soap. A great sustainable project to celebrate Earth Day! This class is part of our Art & Sip series. Grab a drink and get creative with these classes for adults. Beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and snacks will be available for purchase in the Atrium Bar. This season you’ll see a special focus on art projects inspired by our current exhibit Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper. Pushing the Envelope: Artists on Tradition & Innovation | Downtown Longmont, CO

Hear extraordinary people talk about issues of importance to Northern Colorado and beyond at an event that’s part of the Longmont Museum’s Thursday Nights at the Museum series. Join us from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 14 for a conversation with three contemporary Colorado artists whose work is rooted in tradition but who are now challenging and pushing the boundaries of these ancient practices. The event will feature a panel discussion moderated by Mike McClung, Director, Michael Warren Contemporary. This event is free to attend but reservations are recommended.

Outdoor Family Storytime | Downtown Longmont, CO

The City of Longmont Public Library presents outdoor family storytime, a 30-minute Friday fun storytime designed for children of all ages and their grown-ups! This storytime will include longer picture books, so expect a little more sitting and listening. Silly singing and movement will also be included. Registration  for this event is required each week. Registration for Outdoor Family Storytimes will open one week prior at 9 am. Storytimes are limited to 15 participants at this time, and there is no waitlist.

April 16 

Do Birds of a Feather Flock Together? - Boulder County

Join volunteer naturalists to explore the ponds and wetland that many waterfowl call home from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 16. Learn about ducks, geese, and herons and what makes them unique. This program is for children ages 8 and older and their families. This event is located near Boulder. Exact location provided when registering. Registration required here

Longmont Farmers Market

Since 1987, the Boulder County Farmers Market has worked to cultivate the impact of local food from the ground up. With growers and members that offer produce and products that are completely Colorado grown, raised and owned, you can feel like a legit locavore. The Longmont Farmers Market takes place at the Boulder County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday until November. 

National Park Week at Rocky Mountain National Park 

Come celebrate National Park Week, Earth Day, and National Junior Ranger Day at Rocky Mountain National Park. National Park Week kicks off with a free day on Saturday, April 16. Park entrance fees will be waived on Saturday, April 16. Camping and all other administrative fees will still be in effect. Ignition Dance Fitness - Zumba Class at the Elks Lodge

Join Liliana and Katie, licensed Zumba instructors, for a high energy dance fitness class in the Elks ballroom every Monday and Thursday at 6 p.m. Livestream is also available. 

Outdoor Bilingual Storytime

Join us from the City of Longmont Public Library for stories and songs in Spanish and English for children of all ages with Librarian Valerie every Monday from 10-10:30 a.m.! All aged children with a grown-up are welcome, but this storytime is best for 3 years and older. Registration is required each week. Registration for Outdoor Bilingual Storytime will open one week before at 9 a.m. Storytimes are limited to 15 participants at this time, and there is no waitlist.

April 19 

Speakeasy Open Mic | Downtown Longmont, CO

The Speakeasy Open Mic Night in Longmont is *the* place to take the stage in Longmont. Every Tuesday night, sign-up starts at 7 p.m. and the first performer starts at 8 p.m. Singers, instrumentalists, comedians, poets, hip-hop, and more... all are welcome! Come see the premiere acts in the area, from brand new artists to seasoned performers. 

Open Chess Night

Every Tuesday, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. is Open Chess Night at the Longmont Public Library! We will have some tables set aside on the 2nd floor for playing with chess sets available. However, you may bring your own set. This event is open to all ages, but those 16 and younger must have an adult with them at all times. Evenings will be informal and there will be no instruction on how to play (we do have books on the subject)!

April 20 

Using Apps to Access RTD Workshop - Boulder County

Denver Taiko: Live in Concert

Performing traditional Japanese Taiko, drumming, as well as their own original compositions, Denver Taiko's repertoire of rhythmic grooves and heart-pounding beats make for a dynamic and high-energy show you won't soon forget. Letters to Nature: A Promise Made - Boulder County

This Earth Day-themed program, “Letters to Nature: A Promise Made,” will lead participants through conversations and activities that help us become better protectors of the wildlife and natural resources we've come to appreciate. A short walk and all materials will be included. This event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 22. The location of this event is near Boulder. Exact location provided when registering. Longmont Museum Presents Seicento Baroque Ensemble

Seicento Baroque Ensemble returns to the Longmont Museum on April 22 to showcase J.S. Bach’s glorious Magnificat, and two other regal and joyful pieces. Seicento Baroque Ensemble will showcase J.S. Bach’s glorious Magnificat in E♭, the rarely performed original version of his beloved Magnificat in D, in a celebratory concert of Magnificat settings from the Baroque era. The program will open with a delightful setting once attributed to Buxtehude, followed by a truly beautiful setting by Charpentier. These three regal and joyful pieces will bring back the full Seicento ensemble, with vocal soloists and a baroque orchestra of strings, three baroque trumpets, baroque oboes, baroque recorders, organ, and timpani. We will present our audiences with a full panoply of baroque sound, in gratitude for all their support during the trials of the pandemic! This event will begin at 7 p.m. on April 22. And Then They Came For Us | (2017) NR

Eighty years ago, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, paving the way for the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. This important documentary film “And Then They Came For Us”  illuminates the profound constitutional damage done in the name of national security. Featuring actor George Takei and others who were incarcerated, as well as rediscovered photos by Dorothea Lange, the film brings history into the present and follows Japanese Americans as they work to protect us all from history repeating itself. A screening of “And Then They Came For Us” will be featured at the Longmont Museum starting at 3 p.m. on April 24. The film will be followed by an audience Q&A. Purchase tickets to the event here.  

Not One More Soul

The Alana Faith Chen Foundation, Born Perfect (a program of NCLR), and Out Boulder County invite you to join us on Sunday, April 24 as we honor the life of Alana Chen and commit to do all we can to end conversion therapy. The event starts at 3 p.m. with a reception, followed by a panel of LGBTQ+ community members who have undergone conversion therapy who will share their stories and their efforts to put an end to conversion therapy. This event will begin at Out Boulder County’s office at 3340 Mitchell Ln. in Boulder, 80301.
