Longmont United is one of five Centura Health hospitals named to Newsweek’s 2020 list of Best Maternity Care Hospitals.

The distinction recognizes facilities that have excelled in providing care to mothers, newborns and their families, as verified by the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, according to a news release. Best Maternity Care Hospitals is part of Newsweek’s Best Health Care series, powered by data from the nonprofit Leapfrog Group.

“We are very excited about this award and proud of the high-quality, nationally-ranked care Centura Health provides this community,” Dr. Antony Pearson, chief medical officer at Longmont United Hospital, stated in the release. “Having served this community for over 60 years, this award further demonstrates our commitment to moms and babies in Longmont and in the surrounding areas.”

Nancy Cooper, global editor in chief of Newsweek, in the release stated, “Best Maternity Care Hospitals showcases an elite group of hospitals from across the country. These facilities stand out for the care they provide to women and families, and for giving babies a strong start to life. Particularly in these uncertain times, we are honored to share this list of top-ranked facilities with Newsweek’s readership.”

Best Maternity Care Hospitals meet care standards as determined by Leapfrog, which uses performance reports and patient safety data to assess hospitals. The nonprofit also produces hospital safety grades that are searchable by city and state.

Maternity care criteria include lower rates of early elective delivery, NTSV C-section, and episiotomy, as well as compliance with process measures including newborn bilirubin screening prior to discharge and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section, according to the news release.

Only 11 hospitals in Colorado and 231 across the county were named to the list, which is featured in the July 24 edition of Newsweek. Other Centura hospitals in Colorado on the list include Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville, Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, Littleton Adventist Hospital and St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco.
