A 26-year-old man who was shot by Longmont police early Friday remains in stable condition while the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police spokesman Jeff Satur said Tuesday.
The man, who is Black, had surgery at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland after being airlifted from Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont. The man, whose name has not been released, was shot at the Stonehedge Place Apartment complex at 600 Martin St., after police say he pulled a BB gun on officers.
Satur said the gun looked identical to a handgun.
No officers were hurt. The two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the external investigation, which is department policy.
The Critical Incident Team for the 20th Judicial District is investigating the case, Satur said.
The multi-agency Critical Incident Team investigates fatalities in which law enforcement uses physical or deadly force in the course of official duties.
When police bodycam video of the shooting will be released will be determined by the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, Satur said.
“The investigation by the Boulder County investigations team and the DA’s office is likely three weeks out,” he said.
Police confronted the man at the apartment complex at 1:11 a.m. Friday after a resident reported he was harassing a woman at the complex, police stated in a news release.
Police asked him to put his hands up and asked if he was armed. The man told police he was not armed and initially complied with orders, the release stated. As officers approached the man, he pulled what appeared to be a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at officers.
Officers pulled their weapons and asked the man to put down his weapon, when one officer fired his handgun at the man, police said.
Police said the man then ducked between two cars, and did not comply when ordered to put down the weapon. Another officer fired his rifle at the man.
The officers involved have not been identified. Police have not indicated which of the officers’ shots hit the man.
