In early July, City of Longmont staff observed prairie dogs at the closed City Landfill (located just east of Hayes Conservation Easement). State regulations require the protection of the landfill cover/cap in order to preserve the integrity of the landfill. Burrowing animals can cause water intrusion inside the covered landfill creating the potential for water intrusion and an eventual landfill failure.

In accordance with the City’s Wildlife Management Plan, 4.4.4, staff has prepared a report for City Manager review in order to identify a specific removal action. A public comment period will also be open from July 17 - 21, 2017. Comments collected will be presented along with staff’s Wildlife Management Request to the City Manager for consideration. The final decision will be made by the City Manager and staff will complete removal as directed.

If you have additional questions about this process, please contact Dan Wolford, Land Program Administrator. More information about prairie dog management and the City’s Wildlife Management Plan can be found at LongmontColorado.gov/parks under the Wildlife section.
