On June 14, an estimated five million people nationwide participated in more than 2,000 protests and demonstrations against the Trump administration. The demonstrations were called “No Kings” protests, organized by a handful of organizations including American Opposition, which is based in Colorado.
Robin Ericson, the communications and marketing manager of Longmont Public Safety said that an estimated 2,000 people attended the peaceful protest in Longmont. No arrests related to the protests were made in the city, Ericson said.
This is the second “No Kings” protest that has taken place in Longmont in less than two months. The last demonstration occurred in April and drew more than 1,000 people.
More than a dozen “No Kings” protests occurred across Colorado on Saturday, according to CPR, including one in Boulder, which protest organizers said drew more than 5,000 people.
CPR reported that the number of participants throughout Colorado made these protests “one of the largest demonstrations since the social justice protests of 2020 following the death of George Floyd.”
Longmont City Councilmember Matthew Popkin participated in the “No Kings” protest and shared about his participation in a post on Instagram. He held a sign during the protest that read, “Today’s military parade will cost taxpayers $45 million. That’s 1/10 of Longmont’s budget. Let’s invest in our communities, not charades.”
The caption on his Instagram post explained the sign he held and his participation in the protest. “Helped people contextualize Longmont’s budget today - and protest in support of effective government, accountability, and democracy,” Popkin wrote.
