Time to take the dogs for a walk, Paws in the Park has gone virtual

The Longmont Humane Society fundraiser runs Oct 1-10

For the second year, Longmont Humane Society, or LHS, is taking their 5k walk or run fundraiser virtual due to COVID safety concerns.

To make time for fundraising and still keep humans and animals safe, LHS is stretching the event from October 1-10. LHS is hoping to raise at least $30,000 to continue the care, support and education on animal welfare.

“This allows people to support the organization through their favorite walk, hike or run of their own in honor of the humane society,” said LHS Communications Director Carrie Brackenridge.

In typical years, the Paws in the Park would trace a route through the Rogers Grove and out to Golden Ponds, but now participants can plan their own routes. All runners and walkers need to do to get started is register online and then start their personal fundraiser page. The first 200 registrants will get a reusable tote bag filled with goodies and a t-shirt with this year’s Halloween-themed graphic.

There is no mandatory length for this year’s fundraiser to make it accessible to as much of the community as possible, according to Brackenridge. Photos of the runners and their pets are highly encouraged and LHS hopes that they will be shared through social media to support the event. Participants are welcome to form teams with friends, family or coworkers and create a personal fundraising page for their walk or run. Prizes will be given to the top individual and team that raise the most money on their excursion.

Prizes include a dog goodie basket full of toys, treats and passes for two free days of dog daycare donated by Cottonwood Kennels to the event’s top individual fundraiser, according to Brackenridge. Members of the top fundraising team will all receive tickets to Longmont Humane Society’s March 2022 Homeward Buond fundraiser.

LHS has route suggestions and maps of the area for the most pet-friendly paths for the fundraiser available on its website. Fundraising will last through October 10 and winners will be announced by October 15, according to LHS.
